If you are a webmaster or frequently work on websites and currently own, or plan on getting, an iPad here are 9 apps that I have found particularly helpful for general website management, learning and monitoring. Some of these iPad apps are free and some require a one-time fee.
It occurred way too often that I was away from the office and needed to get a bit of work done. Once Apple launched the iPad my goal was for it to decrease the need for me to be at the computer as much as I previously was as it is easy to just carry it around. Here are some of the apps I use regularly that have allowed me to do partially extend my work to wherever I am.
For Google Analytics on the go the Analytics HD app provides you with useful information within seconds. View your visitor, traffic sources, content, goals and ecommerce analytics for your selected timeframe and also compare agains other timeframes. Analytics HD also offers a premium plan, however, the free app is all I personally need while I am up and about. The premium app goes for $5.99 and the basic app is free.
When I’m working with websites on the iPad I tend to use different browsers based on my task at hand. One of these is the Atomic Web Browser. A few of the features I like about it are that it allows me to easily view the source code of the webpage I’m viewing, open different webpages in tabs, browse the web in private mode, be identified as any browser I choose from the available options and view a webpage in fullscreen. For $0.99 it was a nobrainer for me.
As most of you probably do, I publish a feed. With the dawn of the iPad has come more and more apps that present information in magazine format. Early edition is one such app. Besides using it to stay up-to-date on other sites I also use it to see how my feed publications are displayed. Its not so much of a website management tool but made the cut for me. Cost $4.99.
The Evernote app allows me to easily store information that I gather during my daily web travels. This information get stored and becomes searchable and ready for me to access at a whim. I am made aware of something cool and new each day and now using Evernote I never let them go by unsaved for later. I simply email the file to my Evernote account and its there for me whenever I need it. I store a wealth of business related information quickly and conveniently with Evernote. Gusto is a great addition to my iPad arsenal. It sports a refreshing display of all the sites I connect to including a thumbnail of the homepage of each site. On the functionality side Gusto allows you to easily download files from your server, edit them and upload them. It allows you to download several files at a time and when editing it automatically saves your work. A few more features include tabbed viewing for easy back and forth while editing several files, hiding the files column for more space when editing files and creating new files. Gusto is currently sold for $6.99.
Another browser that I’ve started using is Twin Browser. This app serves one basic function for me and that is the obvious one. It allows me to have two webpages open at the same time and displays them side by side or one above the other depending on your iPad’s orientation. This allows me to do research or other tasks in one window while monitoring live website analytics such as Get Clicky Real-time Analytics or some other service. Twin Browser currently sells for $1.99.
Logmein Ignition costs $29.99! Ok, whew, now that I’ve got that out the way let me tell you why I love this app and decided to bite the bullet. This app is great, and has proven to be a savior for me on many occasions. It allows me to remotely access my other computers and manage them almost as if I were sitting in front of them. It offers a plethora of options and features allowing the iPad to really become an extension of your connected machines. Dual monitors? Not a problem, Logmein handles it with style offering you two options, a button and also rocking your iPad from side to side, to switch monitors. A fair bit of this article was written via a Logmein connection to my pc and I must say that it has been $29.99 well spent.
For simple blog content management WordPress for iPad does the trick. It allows you to have all your blogs or wordpress powered websites easily accessible for page amd post content creation and editing as well as comment management. The WordPress app also enables you to add images to your content from your saved pics on the iPad, toggle image resizing, set passwords for your page/post, set a publish date and preview your content prior tp publishing. Cost? Free.
My last addition to the list falls on the educational side of things and is actually an iPhone app but works great on the iPad as the videos are all high quality. Lynda.com is a vast resource covering numerous areas that you may be interested in becoming more knowledgeable in. Its perfect for those downtime moments when youre away from it all and would like to ramp up your skill set. To use it you need to be a member of the Lynda.com site which will run you about $25/month or more depending on the plan you choose. App cost? Free.
